Herb Spiral Workshop Kariong EcoGarden 2007
Herb spirals are useful garden constructions that make use of the idea of layering. That is, the garden has upper, middle and lower levels but the layout is a spiral effect. They can be constructed from any suitable recycled material.
They are useful where space is restricted because you can construct them to whatever size you need. Herbs that prefer drier conditions can be grown up high and therefore provide an element of protection for lower level herbs.
Lower level herbs would generally prefer more water and shelter, depending on what you grow, you can plan for more or less shade according to plant location. The shape of the spiral and gravity work together to distribute water.
Best located near the main access door to your house or nearby the kitchen, herb spirals can contain a combination of edible and medicinal herbs. Just stroll outside when you are preparing a meal to reap the adjacent benefits.
