PCC Website Tips

Browsers

We recommend using Firefox, or at least the latest version of Internet Explorer, (Version 8). Our site will work in earlier browser versions, but for peace of mind as far as your computer security goes, you should always use the browser with the least likelhood of posing a security risk. This means that latest versions are usually more secure than previous versions. And, they usually display better than earlier versions too.

Refreshing

Computers cache files so you may not always get the latest version of a webpage when you revisit the same page. There will always be ongoing updates to pages on our site, especially the What's On pages. Make sure you refresh your browser just in case you are viewing an older page.

JavaScript

We use JavaScript in this website, if you don't have JavaScript activiated, you may have issues with menus and other functions. We suggest you enable JavaScript. Be sure to also identify the PCC website as a safe site so that you don't get warnings every visit. It will depend on your browser type on how best to achieve this, but it will usually be in your security settings.

Links and Tabs

Tabbed Browsing Example

Modern browsers have tabbed browsing. This is useful if there are a lot of links in a site and you want to be able to get back quickly to the main site, eg: PCC's. Internet Explorer 8 and the later Firefox Browsers support tabbed browsing (see picture above). The links in PCC's site do not open a new browser window, but if you use tabbed browsing, you can CTRL/click to open a new tab, or set up your browser to open a new window.

Smooth Screen Fonts

It is best to view text by using ClearType on your computer, it makes text display smoother.

To do this, go to your desktop and right mouse click, select properties then select appearance, and then select effect. Next tick the box "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", then select ClearType and click OK. Make sure you select apply and OK to finish off.

Acrobat Files - pdf

Newsletters, calendars and some other files are Acrobat pdf. If, when you click on the link, you are asked to save the file, you might need to change your browser settings to allow the pdf to open without having to save it.
